Ford beating Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 is one of the greatest automotive stories of all time. However, claiming a 1-2-3 win didn’t happen overnight for Ford. The GT40 program underwent several revisions before the winning combination of Mk II opened. Among these is the signature red/gold GT40 Mk I from Alan Mann Racing, called the AM GT-1. This is the basis for the latest Ford GT special edition trim.
Officially, this is the 2022 Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition, and when the doors open at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, it will be on display for all to see. It sports a striking red exterior finish with gold and white graphics, including over-the-top gold stripes and roundels bearing the number 16 – the same number that was used when the original car raced in 1966. One thing that was missing on the old GT40 was carbon. fiber, but you’ll find it in the Alan Mann Heritage Edition with wheels, side sills, rear diffuser, mirrors, front splitter and engine grille.
There’s more red and gold trim on the inside, with stitching accents and at various points around the cabin. The paddle shifters match the red exterior perfectly. The gold inlay on the dashboard brings extra life to a dark blend of leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber. The number 16 is camouflaged into the door panel. And you’ll find more gold on the X support for the chair.

“Whether it’s going to be tough on the racetrack or innovating in the competition, the Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition honors the vehicle that helped lead Ford to victory,” said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager. “With its red and gold colors, this Ford GT is inspired by Alan Mann Racing’s contribution to our Le Mans winning story.”
The AM GT-1 prototype uses a smaller 289 cubic-inch V8 engine, and is the only GT40 to have an aluminum body. Only two were made, but Ford will build more than two Alan Mann Heritage Edition models for the current generation GT. Exactly how much isn’t mentioned, but with the production of the Ford GT ending in its final year, this is sure to be a very rare machine.
The Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition will share space with the 1966 AM GT-1 prototype at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, starting February 12.
