The BMW M5 CS sits at the top of the 5 Series lineup. It’s big, luxurious and full of horsepower and torque, but is it faster than the decade-old Porsche 911 Turbo S? A new Carwow video answers that question by pitting the super sedan against the 997.2 generation Turbo S.
BMW uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 626 horsepower (473 kilowatts, 635 metric hp) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque. BMW transmits all that power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. Porsche also has all-wheel drive, but gets power from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine that makes 530 hp (395 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque.

The BMW weighs 4,023 pounds (1,825 kilograms), which is more than the 3,494-lbs (1,585-kg) Porsche curb weight, but it’s also more powerful. It’s strong enough to keep BMW off the line ahead of Porsche and keep it there until the finish line. The M5 got a slightly better start, and that was enough to keep the 911 in second place. However, the Porsche was right on the BMW’s bumper, crossing the finish line in 11.2 seconds compared to the BMW’s 11.1 seconds.
With both cars in the most comfortable setting, the first race to roll was another win for BMW. The BMW accelerated faster than the Porsche, but the difference diminished in the second race when both cars were in their sportiest setting with the gearbox set in manual mode. BMW is still winning, but Porsche is not far behind.
The final test between the two showed their stopping power. The BMW was heavier, which was a weakness in this test, but the car’s brakes were able to stop it a few car distances behind the Porsche, requiring more distance to come to a complete stop.
The Porsche 911 Turbo S 997.2 was a crazy car a decade ago, but it still has the ability to keep up with today’s engines. It may not have won a single test against BMW, but the 911 Turbo S still impressed.
