Classic Mini Blows Its Own Doors Off Racing 1,000-HP Charger Hellcat

We’ve seen some interesting drag racing cars at Hoonigan’s this vs. It series. When we say interesting, we usually mean quite wild but this time, it wasn’t the car that was interesting. How fast they are, especially the mighty Mini.

We don’t know if the 1974 Mini’s official nickname is the Super Cooper, but it should be. There is a 3.2-liter Acura V6 engine located at the rear, with a capacity of 3.5 liters and crowned with a supercharger to produce 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts). The Mini’s position is much wider than the stock to make room for a mill and manual transaxle, but it’s not a barebones race car. It has air conditioning, and the dashboard is equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system.

In this case, Mini competitions also combine creature comfort with insane power. Everyone is familiar with the Dodge Charger Hellcat by now; this is a 2016 model that we say produces at least 1,000 hp (746 kilowatts). The owner is shy about revealing all the upgrades, but when the starting point is the 707-hp Hellcat engine, it’s not that hard to break the 1,000-hp barrier.

At first glance, one might think this is an open and closed case for Dodge. It has twice the power of the Mini, but the Super Cooper may be three times lighter than a large sedan. The exact weights are mentioned, but if you need proof of the Mini’s power-to-weight ratio, the first of three races tells you what you need to know. It jumps off the line, spins tires like crazy but isn’t quite as bad as the Charger. The launch was so sudden that the Cooper engine cover came off. For the most part, however – it dragged on for the entire race, which by the way, Mini wins by a few car lengths. Super Cooper, indeed!

The Mini had a minor mechanical problem for the second race, giving the Charger the win. As for the final lap, it’s a roll race where both cars struggle with traction as they go down the track. In the end, the Charger’s superior strength paid off at the big end of the track, although the Mini wasn’t far behind in the finish. In fact, Cooper’s performance was so good that a bonus race was held, again from the ground up. We’re not going to spoil that final result but we will say this: it’s really great to see two very different vehicles involved in exciting side-by-side racing.
