New Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe Spy Shots Capture Future 911 Competitor

[ad_1]

New spy photos show Mercedes testing the upcoming AMG GT Coupe on and around the famous Nurburgring race track. We first saw the two new doors earlier this year, and while it hasn’t lost much of its camouflage over the past few months, we’ve seen a few different trims. However, we don’t know when Mercedes will hold a full disclosure.

The new photos show the AMG GT Coupe continuing to sport a lot of camouflage, but there appears to be a bit of back cover. However, Mercedes doesn’t really hide behind a tight wrapper. The new AMG GT Coupe is the twin brother of the SL Roadster. Both have a similar shape, but the AMG GT Coupe will get a different style.

The AMG GT Coupe’s grille sits lower in the face of the car, and the headlights have a different shape and position. At the rear, the car looks sleek, with a rounded rear end and four exhaust pipes poking through the rear diffuser. They will likely stick to the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that also powers the new SL.

The engine in the SL produces two outputs: 469 horsepower (350 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque and a mighty 577 hp (430 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). It’s unclear which moniker Mercedes will attach to each output or whether Mercedes will put more power out of the engine.

There is a high chance that Mercedes will offer a car with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as governments around the world enforce strict emission regulations. Mercedes may make it for certain markets. However, one AMG GT Coupe variant that should be widely looked at is the plug-in hybrid. Our spy photographers have seen it, and the intel we have heard paints an interesting picture of the show.

All signs point to Mercedes pairing its 4.0-liter V8 to an electric motor, which it does with the GT 63 SE Performance. That model pumps out 831 hp (620 kW) and 1,033 lb-ft (1,400 Nm) of torque. There’s little doubt that such a setup in the new AMG GT Coupe will deliver similar performance figures.

We don’t know when Mercedes will reveal the new AMG GT Coupe, but it could happen later this year or early next year. We will continue to monitor new photos and details until then. When it goes on sale, it will compete with cars like the Porsche 911.
