BMW Rules Out Formula 1 Return To Fight Audi And Porsche


Volkswagen Group supremo Herbert Diess recently confirmed the German conglomerate’s desire to enter Formula 1 with Porsche and Audi. It won’t happen until 2026 when a new set of rules will overhaul the competition (again), which will make the combustion engine switch to a fully synthetic fuel. Our friends in BMWBLOG curious to know if Bayerische Motoren Werke AG wants to rejoin the fray in about four years’ time.

Unfortunately, the Bavarians have no such intention as BMW M boss Frank Van Meel says the M division’s motorsport side “has no ambition for Formula 1.” Explaining why the company wouldn’t return after 2009 when it parted ways with Sauber, boss M said it had to do with regulations relating to powertrains:

“For us, it is very important to have [electrification] The story of the transformation embraced as soon as possible. Formula 1 is still discussing the regulations surrounding electrification. So, for us, it’s very clear. Let’s go faster into it [electrification] segment.”


Instead, the company invested heavily in the Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) racer, who is now expected to hit the track for the 2024 season as the 2023 entry has been ruled out. Even without re-entering F1, BMW still has to face the VW Group as Lamborghini, Porsche and Audi are all working on the LMDh project. Joining them are Acura, Cadillac, Alpine, and Peugeot.

Beyond its LMDh program, BMW’s motorsport division also has an M4 GT3 race car, with a GT4 version set to launch in mid-June at VIRginia International Raceway during rounds five and six of the 2022 SRO Americas Championship. There’s also the entry-level M2 CS Racing, which based on the old M2 F87. The compact sport coupe in the guise of the streets will transition to the G87 model in the coming months.
