Porsche Mission R Morphs Into 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance Test Car

There’s no turning back now – like it or not, the future of Porsche’s smaller sports car is electric. By 2025, the 718 lineup will lose its internal combustion engine and become an EV. The announcement was made back in March, but the writing has been on the wall since last September when Mission R arrived at IAA Munich in Germany. The concept has now been shifted to a running prototype, dubbed the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance.

Just like the previous 2021 Mission R, the test car borrows its chassis from the track-only 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport. The electric motor and battery pack have been sourced from last year’s concept, meaning the “baby Porsche” has a maximum output of 986 horsepower (735 kilowatts) in qualifying mode. This produces a constant 603 hp (450 kW) for 30 minutes or the duration of a Carrera Cup race.

Porsche has carried out a performance analysis and shows the electric engine’s lap times and top speed are almost the same as the 911 GT3 Cup. The dual-motor 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance uses 900 volt technology and can charge the battery from 5 to 80 percent in just 15 minutes. Although based on existing cars, some 6,000 parts had to be developed for the electric race car, which is 14 cm (5.5 inches) wider.

Riding on 18-inch Michelin racing tires which are mostly renewable materials, this electric race car has an eco-friendly body in the sense that it uses natural fiber composites to reduce emissions compared to a body made of synthetic materials. Porsche even uses recycled carbon fiber to show that even race cars can be engineered with sustainability in mind.

The next production version will be released roughly three years from now, and meanwhile, the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance will debut in June. Porsche will be bringing the sporty EV to the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​where it will be climbing the famous hill. The itinerary also includes a visit to the Porsche factory in Leipzig on August 20 to mark the factory’s 20th anniversaryth birthday.

Two examples of zero emission engines will travel to various parts of Europe before arriving in North America in early 2023. The world tour will conclude in mid-2024 after visiting countries from the Asia-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, the road-going Cayman GT4 RS isn’t the end of the line for the ICE-powered 718 family as Porsche is planning a Boxster Spyder RS ​​equivalent.
