2023 Mercedes-AMG C63 Wagon Spied Testing 2.0-Liter Engine At Nurburgring

The C63 will soon debut as the flagship version in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class family. However, purists may not be happy at all because the new performance C will have a small four-cylinder engine under the hood. The C63 from the W205 model family has twice the number of cylinders and twice the displacement.

Seen in a test video surrounding the Nurburgring in wagon form, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 will adopt an electrified 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Powered by an electric motor, the plant will produce around 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts), which is a serious blow. However, as you can hear in this video, the powertrain probably won’t produce the appropriate soundtrack as expected from the C63.

Performance-wise, it’s hard to predict how capable the new top dog in the Class C family will be. We hear it will be offered only with a nine-speed automatic gearbox. You might think ditching the V8 would result in a heavy diet for the new C63, though considering the hardware associated with the hybrid, we actually believe the new generation will be a bit heavier than the model it replaces.

As before, the upscale C class will continue to be available as both a sedan and wagon. The latter will go head-to-head against the first BMW M3 Touring, coming later this year with a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine. The two cars are expected to have similar performance capabilities and we are eager to see the first drag race between the fastest carriages from Bavaria and Stuttgart.

As a final note, just yesterday Mercedes unveiled the C43, which also has a 2.0-liter engine under the hood. The electrified unit produces 400 hp (300 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque, which is slightly more than the current C63 with 385 hp (287 kW) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque coming in. from the 3.0 liter V6 engine. A nine-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive system transmit power to all four wheels.
