AMG C43 Replacement Spied With Two Of Its Cylinders Missing

We’ve been spying on the successor to the Mercedes-AMG C43 for over two years, but it looks like there’s still some testing that needs to be done. Nürburgring “resident” Mike Automotive has seen the sports sedan pushed hard at the Nordschleife ahead of its potential world debut in the coming months. The easiest way to tell it’s the “AMG Lite” version is with the smaller trunk lid spoiler and the rounded shape of the quad exhaust tips.

Because of its disguise, it’s hard to say whether the C63 will have wider fenders than the C43, although logic tells us that the range-topper will have bigger tracks. The sound you hear no longer comes from the V6 as all variants of the C-Class W206 are only four cylinders. The same goes for its equivalent SUV, the GLC, with the only exception being the 400d with its six-cylinder diesel. In other words, AMG will really be a four-cylinder affair.

While AMG is eager to talk about the new C63 with its longitudinally mounted M139 engine and electric motor, the folks from Affalterbach have been tight-lipped about the C43. We don’t even know if it will keep its name as there have been rumors of switching to the “C53” moniker. Regardless of how it will be called, it should also get the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine of the AMG “45” model.

This pushes out a healthy 416 hp in the CLA45 S, which, oddly enough, is already more than the 385 hp available from the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 of the C43. Out of respect for the pecking order, of course AMG wants the base model of the next-generation AMG C-Class to beat the lesser compact model for its premium. If we make educated guesses, the prototype that underwent last minute testing at the ‘Ring had roughly 430-450 hp to create a sizeable gap compared to the “45” car.

Some form of electrification can be implemented to keep regulators happy by lowering emissions. This will have a positive impact on overall power as well, but at the expense of weight as the hybrid setup will add bulk. The 2023 AMG C43/53 will likely be automatic and all-wheel-drive-only. Speaking of the 4Matic, the flagship C63 will get an all-paw system for the first time since being used to send power only to the rear axle.

C43/C53 should be disclosed before C63, so premieres can take place sooner rather than later.
