2023 Mitsubishi Colt Rendered Based On Teaser Looks Familiar

At the end of July 2020, Mitsubishi announced that it would stop its activities in Europe by not launching new products. However, the company has changed its mind considering the new ASX will be released in early 2023 as the equivalent of the Renault-made Captur. This will join the Colt being reborn in the same year, which will also be the Clio that the company will recreate with a diamond logo.

Recently teased, the new Colt returns in a speculative rendering published by College to show how it can differ from its French connection. To keep costs down, it seems highly unlikely that Mitsubishi will change some of the body panels such as the doors, hood and roof. That said, Mitsu will try to give the supermini a new look by installing redesigned headlights and taillights along with a reshaped corporate grille and bumper.

The Colt’s “hidden” rear door handles on the C-pillar are seen in the teaser image, representing a mechanically related Nissan Micra design trait. The latter is living on loan time as it will be replaced by an electric subcompact hatchback in 2025. It remains to be seen how successful the Mitsubishi version will be considering that the Renault Clio name is much more popular in Europe.

The “Hybrid EV” badge on the door is visible in the teaser image, thus suggesting the Colt 2023 will be offered with an electric powertrain. Specifically, it has to borrow hardware from the Clio E-Tech Hybrid. The tiny hatch pairs a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine with an electric motor for a decent total output of 140 hp. Of course, the highlight of the car is the fuel efficiency to convince people that the days of diesel engines are really over.

Time will tell whether the ASX and Colt will help increase Mitsubishi’s presence in Europe or whether these two products will be eclipsed by their donor Renault car. It was a shameful attempt to survive on the Old Continent while capitalizing on alliances with Renault and Nissan. All three have the right job for it by launching no less than 35 EVs by the end of the decade.
