Lego Five-Speed Transmission Build With Dyno Is An Engineering Marvel

Have you ever wondered how a manual transmission functions? Do you like legos? Well, if you answered yes to one or both of these questions, we have a video for you. Youtuber and master maker of Lego Brick Technology recently made a video showing the creation of a fully functional 5-speed manual transmission with reverse. This Lego engineering feat is also a great illustration of how manual transmissions work and even shows the importance of gear ratios.

Lego is no stranger to creating exciting car kits for fans to enjoy like this Bugatti Chiron set.

Brick Technology started with a very simple two-speed transmission driven by an electric motor. From there, the transmission build goes into full swing as two gear sets are added. This leads to a total of 5 speeds that follow a normal manual transmission layout. Once the transmission guts are done, it’s time to get to work on the shifters.

Building a shifter for a newly minted Lego transmission took some trial and error by Brick Technology. For starters, there are a lot of slips in the transmission which will make it difficult to clean dirt and will inevitably attract negative feedback from lego automotive journalists. To overcome this slop, reinforcement pieces were added which in the end resulted in a very precise and fast transmission.

A shifter was then added to the transmission where Brick Technology tested the gearshift action. During the test, the shifter jammed due to the length of the throw. Luckily Brick Technology added a Lego short shift kit that solves this problem.

With the forward gear in working order, it was time to tackle the reverse. Part of this creation was the unique opportunity to learn how reverse gear is made using a combination of input and output gears to drive the car backwards.

Now that the transmission is complete, it plugs into a Lego dyno to power its power output. The dynamometer build itself is a unique display of the engineering behind the engine that made YouTube cars famous.

The finished Lego build runs through its final tests on switching dynos between all five years and rewinds the moment at full speed. This last test demonstrated the robust build quality of this fully functional 5-speed Lego transmission. This is probably the most complex lego engineered build we’ve seen since Lego built a fully functional Bugatti Chiron.
