Acura Exiting Chinese Market After Only Six Years: Report

[ad_1]

Acura enjoys decent demand for the new Integra 2023 in the United States, but it seems that not everything is going according to plan in China. In the People’s Republic, the premium brand from Japan has a joint venture with local automaker GAC, but the company’s operations are reported to be dramatically reduced from 2023. No official announcement is available at this time, although letters have been sent to Acura customers in the country.

NewsCarsChina reports that GAC Acura will cease operations starting next year with the cancellation of sales and production of existing products. However, according to the report, automakers may eventually bring new products to the Chinese market, especially when new electric models are launched. No exact time frame can be given at this time.

Acura was launched in China in 2016 and sales peaked in 2019 when 14,701 cars were delivered to customers. Last year, only 6,554 Acura vehicles were sold in the country from the brand’s two-model lineup. The only Acuras available in the country at the moment are the CDX and RDX SUVs, both of which outsell their respective competitors from the premium German brand.

For a moment, Honda also offered a new NSX with the Acura badge, but the sales were negligible. The China-only TLX-L sedan also did not achieve great success in the market and was discontinued only a few years after its launch. Things could change when the first electric and electric Acura models arrive.

For now, Acura’s GAC employees will be integrated into Honda’s GAC family and will focus on developing the Japanese company’s business. In addition, the company will continue to provide maintenance services for Acura owners in the country. Honda currently has the e:NS1 as its only electric vehicle available in China, but is still struggling to find enough customers. The Honda e is not available in the Chinese market, at least for now.
