Lotus unveiled the new Emira at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, the company did not provide any concrete details about the powertrain. That changed today with the announcement that Mercedes-AMG cars sourced from Mercedes’ M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder will produce 360 horsepower (268 kilowatts). That’s well below the engine output in various Mercedes models, which put out 416 hp (310 kW) in the AMG A45 S.
Lotus says the engine is a “bespoke version” of the M139, which includes hardware designed to assist in integrating it into the car’s mid-mount layout. However, the company didn’t say where it lost nearly 60 horsepower.

Lotus most likely turned the engine off so as not to interfere with the more powerful supercharged 3.5-liter V6 engine also available in the Emira First Edition. This Toyota-sourced engine produces 400 hp (298) and the same amount of torque as a four-cylinder Mercedes – 309 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters). Lotus pairs a 2.0-liter engine with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox driving the rear wheels.
The Emira First Edition will be sold on 20-inch ultra-light forged wheels with a premium two-tone finish. Lotus will offer silver and gloss black alloy wheels as a free option. Inside the wheels will sit two-piece calipers branded in red, black, yellow, or silver. The colors will match the six exterior options – Seneca Blue, Magma Red, Hethel Yellow, Dark Verdant, Shadow Grey, and Nimbus Grey.
Inside, there are seven interior color options, satin chrome finish, white mood lighting, heated 12-way electric seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and other knick-knacks. The First Edition comes with the Drivers Pack, Design Pack and Convenience Pack as standard, offering suspension and tire options, privacy glass, parking sensors, and more.
The entry-level four-cylinder Emira will be available from next spring, with the launch of the V6 variant in January 2023 for $82,900 (all prices exclude destination fees). Lotus will release more details about the entry-level model sometime this summer.
The Lotus Emira First Edition with four cylinders starts at $85,900. The V6-powered Emira with manual starts at $93,000. Lotus says the model will start arriving this fall in the UK. Those customers can start ordering their car from April 8th.
