BMW Launches AR Experience That Lets You View Cars In Your Driveway


The coronavirus pandemic is changing the way new cars are bought and sold. There are more options online than ever, with more dealers using this technology. Augmented reality and related technologies help customers get closer to the latest brand models without having to go to a dealer. The latest automaker to embrace this technology is BMW, which has a new AR experience that gives customers a close-up view of its two electric vehicles.

The BMW AR experience allows customers to digitally place their BMW i4 or iX into any real-world environment. However, BMW goes a step further by allowing customers to explore the vehicle. The app allows several interactions, such as opening and closing doors, changing exterior paint colors, and playing with lighting elements.

BMW is nurturing with Google Cloud on the project, which provides a photorealistic experience to users who will be able to see the vehicle up close. Users will notice fine details such as interior stitching or leather grain. AR is no substitute for visiting a dealer and testing a vehicle, but it can be a valuable tool in a customer’s shopping arsenal. BMW’s AR experience highlights two of its new electric vehicles, set to launch in the US. The BMW iX is a brand new flagship, an all-electric SUV packed with technology and power. Another EV is the Gran Coupe i4 sedan, and both go on sale in the first quarter of 2022. The i4 starts at $56,395 (price includes $995 destination fee), while the iX is slightly more expensive, starting at $84,195.
