Mercedes-AMG CLE Convertible Spied For The First Time

Remember the rumors from about six years ago about the Mercedes CLS being renamed the CLE for the current generation? That’s clearly not the case as the swoopy sedan still carries the same name as at its christening in 2004. However, the CLE is once again making headlines as reports state it will be used to simplify the C-Class and E-Class lineups. How? By combining a pair of two-door models into one coupe and cabrio.
We’ve been spying on the CLE conjecture for a while now, but this is our first look at a more powerful derivative. Caught undergoing testing in snowy Sweden, the prototype is likely to be a variation of the AMG judging by the larger wheels housing larger brakes. The sporty convertible should have a stiffer suspension as it seems to go closer to the road, but the biggest prize is in the rear.

Previous test vehicles had the exhaust tucked under the bumper, but this one isn’t afraid to show it off. There are only two circular ends, although the cut in the bumper is much larger. This could be a sign of the potential AMG CLE not having a final setup, perhaps a more threatening quad setup.
It’s easy enough to see the car as a diamond for missing the last taillight and driving mismatched wheels. The headlights also appear transient and we wonder why the disguise on the fabric roof has protrusions that look like air vents. There’s not much to say about its design as Mercedes made sure to completely disguise its new convertible.
Time will tell if the three-pointed star will stick to the CLK recipe by combining the design of the E-Class with the foundations of the lesser C-Class. While only convertibles have been spotted so far, it likely won’t be long before our spies will find the coupe as well. Looking at this prototype, it tells us that an official reveal is unlikely until early 2023.
If it were to be based on the C-Class, both AMG flavors would match the four-cylinder and all-wheel drive engines because the V8 RWD formula dies with the W205.
